Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) is a strategy that is used to prevent HIV. Individuals that are HIV-negative take anti-HIV medications before they come into contact with HIV. This reduces the individual’s risk of becoming infected. It is different than Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) where individuals take HIV medications after coming into contact with HIV.
Truvada is a prescription medication that is used to treat HIV and to help prevent HIV by reducing the risk of HIV infection. The FDA approved Truvada in 2012 for PrEP. The medication is prescribed to be taken one time per day by individuals that may be at risk for HIV-1. The medication is a combination of emtricitabine and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate. It is used with other medications to treat HIV-1. Enzymes called HIV reverse transcriptas are blocked by using Truvada, which prevents HIV from making additional copies of itself in the body.

Lawsuits have been filed against Gilead Sciences due to their Truvada medication causing permanent damage to kidneys and bones. Additionally, lawsuits allege that the company suppressed a safer version of the drug that was less toxic to maximize their profits. The active ingredient in the drug, tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) is toxic when taken in large doses over an extended period.

The FDA has issued Gilead several warnings over the years. In 2003, the FDA sent another Truvada warning letter to the company to stop downplaying the risks.
